Oh, well. Good job, Fury. The lying, scheming patchface learned some discretion after all. Anyway. Yeah.
[He taps his reactor in a well-known personal rhythm and plays it off like it's nothing. Even though it's everything.]
It's just a back-up. Palladium is kind of extremely toxic when it's in your body for extended periods of time but you work with what you have, I guess. Don't exactly have the tools I need to build a prismatic accelerator for the vibranium one. Not yet.
[Yes, SHIELD sucks and he doesn't trust him but they can't just assume he's awful person because of it.]
What does the palladium do?
[Sorry if his questions are irritating but he has no idea how that sort of thing works. He doesn't know exactly what the accelerator does either but that's not important right now and if Tony needs it, then he needs it.]
He's been hiding HYDRA weapons and refitting them for his own nefarious purposes, Rogers. He's that bad.
[But now's not the time for that fight. That can come later.]
It's basically the heart of my heart. Well, okay, no, that's not entirely accurate. All the reactor is is a tiny little car battery attached to an electro magnet - you following me here? Because I'm not repeating this - that keeps the shrapnel in my chest from shredding my heart into a ton of tiny little pieces of tissue and mass. The palladium is what makes it react along with a few dozen other materials all carefully crafted into a tiny little space. The accelerator is a whole different ball game. For that what I really need... is JARVIS.
[His shoulders droop a little--you just had to remind him didn't you? He still wants to believe the best in people and if you convoluted it a little, he understands. That doesn't mean he trusts them but he's trying to save the world which puts him one step up from Schmidt at least.]
He had a reason. It's more than we can say about Loki.
[He'll listen attentively to what Tony tells him and yes, his forehead creases a little as he tries to put all the pieces together. Steve knows, vaguely, that Tony had been caught by terrorists. There had been a number of news segments on it.
He can only assume that's where the shrapnel came from; he won't ask. He remembers how rough it'd been for Bucky to come back from Schmidt's base.]
A magnet keeps metal from reaching your heart and palladium makes it work. [He repeats with a frown. See he can follow along! Enough anyway.] JARVIS is a computer thing right? Can you [He fishes for a word but he isn't sure what is appropriate in this context.] remake him?
