[ yo what's up, Omega. York is in a shiny brand-new suit of armor, bought right in Omega, rather than her usual clunky old Freelancer armor. It's a hell of a lot sleeker than what she used to wear, that's for sure, and she looks pretty damned pleased about it.

But not just about the armor. York's grinning for an entirely new reason today. ]

Everybody settling in all right? Good, 'cause I've got some good news for the thirsty crowd. I just got myself a new job at a bar here in Zeta District, servin' drinks. And this weekend we've got an extended happy hour special goin' on, so if you're looking for a drink, then I highly suggest hauling your ass over to The Quad. I might even slip you a free drink for the trouble.

[ She actually winks, grinning and showing teeth. She tosses her hair out of her face with a quick shake of her head. ]

'Course, if you're more interested in the home security market, I'm still available for installs and upgrades. But I figured it was time to move on up in the job market. Besides, I mix one hell of a Dirty Shirley.

You get them while they're sleeping.

[ As simple as that, he makes it sound, but then shakes his head. ]

Or you sedate them, find out when they're going in for surgery and get in while that's going on. Time in dreams is distorted, so you only need a window of five or ten minutes, usually, to do what you need to do.

People know it happens, though. A lot of people make money training people's minds to resist that kind of thing. Militarizing, we call it.

[ Really, he's just trying to suss it out. Everyone in 'the business' always seems to have multiple sides to one coin, and the bartender job on the side is really quite convenient, all things considered. ]

York's eyebrows are still cocked, but she looks more interested than anything else. ]

How'd this all get started, then? Doesn't really sound like a criminal invention. 'Course, most things with great criminal applications aren't.

[ And she hesitates, but then she asks because she's totally curious: ]

I take it you've had that kinda training, too?

[ He might not be as good as Eames at reading people, but he can tell she's at least intrigued, more than scared off. ]

Yeah, I've had that kind of training. I've taken some jobs where that was my job, a few times.

[ He takes another drink, drains his alcohol, but doesn't ask for another. ]

It wasn't. I was in the military, before it happened. They developed the program and the device as a training simulator - for soldiers to shoot, stab and kill each other in real world combat, then wake up and be able to do it again.

People came in to design courses. Then we started playing around with the dreams, discovering what you could do with them. Discovered you could make dreams within dreams, things like that.

[ He shrugs his shoulder artfully. ]

They shut the program down, and then some complications happened in my life. I ended up leaving the military. One guess as to what I ended up doing.

I'm Zoe!

[ Her grip is firmer than one might expect from someone so tiny, but Zoe doesn't make any sign of noticing that. She leans forward on the counter, peering at the glass. ]

Okay, let's see what you've got!

Ugh, 'almost' Coke might as well be Pepsi. [ This is a holy war, and York just declared herself on the wrong side. ] But you take what you can get, huh? Can you at least put it in one of those short glasses with some ice cubes. You know, like. Scotch on the rocks.

[ He bites into his mutilated slice with a smile. No, he's not actually asking for booze, this is just for appearances, right? ]

[ Yeah, okay, York's starting to get the feeling that this guy's just trying to feel her out more than anything. Maybe he's got some kind of sneaky business, maybe he's just curious. Who knows. ]

Well, you ever feel like an upgrade, you let me know. Or, y'know, a drink.

[ god marco you're adorable cut that right out ]

Yeah, 'cause you look like you know about scotch.

[ She finishes her first piece of pizza and pours him the drink as requested, because hey, she did feel kind of bad shooting him down about the whole booze thing. Not that she regrets it, but hey, she was thirteen once, too. Ah, fond memories of using a bent screwdriver and a mangled paperclip to pick the lock on her dad's liquor cabinet. ]

So how's the pizza delivery boy business lately?

One Seaside Sunrise, comin' up, Zoe.

[ It only takes her a minute or two to mix the drink before she slides it across the bar to Zoe, moving to rinse out the shaker. She grins at Zoe, cocking one eyebrow. ]

So, how'd I do?

I suppose the possibility of you serving wine is out of the question.

I know plenty about scotch, thank you very much. [ He picks up the glass and swills it around a little, then sniffs it gently before taking a tiny sip. Of course, since it's a carbonated beverage and not actually scotch, it just fizzes a little and also makes him look kind of silly. ] It's the drink of choice for brooding, washed-out former secret agents who no longer know what to do with themselves after getting forcibly retired from their gigs.

[ yes marco you nurse your coke on the rocks like a man ]

I think I'm really not cut out for this whole pizza running thing. You know what my delivery experience was before I got here? I'd call up a pizza place and they would send pizza to me, not the other way around. I wonder if I could like subcontract the actual delivery part and just take a cut of pay for organizing other people to move shit around for me.

[ Zoe curls a hand around the glass and brings it to her lips, taking a long, experimental sip. She's smiling by the time she puts it back down. ]

Mmmm! That's what I was looking for. Though it's usually stronger back home. Maybe they probably can't get good liquers out here?

Well, don't tell my boss I said so, but most of the stuff here isn't exactly top shelf. I'll just remember to make it stronger for you next time.

[ Still, the girl looks pleased. And she doesn't look quite like the average inhabitant of Omega. ]

So what do you do, anyway?

Not entirely. I mean, I can't promise you it'll be from a California vineyard or anything. Or...Earth. But hey, better than nothing, right?

What about a brooding, washed-out former secret agent who was pretty happy to quit the gig?

[ York gives him an amused grin, and it occurs to her that he's never really asked her what she does. Or did, before she became The Quad's only human bartender. He probably just assumed she was some kind of soldier, which, honestly, isn't all that far off the mark anyway. ]

Sounds like you're destined for middle management, kiddo.

Which is all anyone can really ask for.

Gee, I wonder.

[ York sounds amused, but still -- holy shit, Arthur. She takes a second to process all that, mulling it over. It makes sense, in a weird way -- and she's heard weirder, that's for sure. This isn't all that hard to swallow. ]

So...not an accountant, then.

[ Whoosh goes the sound of York's self-reference going over Marco's head. He's only nosy sometimes, and York hasn't made him want to pry into her personal life yet. ]

The ones who quit on their own? I dunno, they probably shoot tequilla or something. But you never just up and walk off, 'cause the Circus always finds you in the end. That much I know for sure. [ He nods sagely, taking another sip from the glass like he thought he was a grizzled old veteran. ]

But I don't think I really have the heart for middle management. That means there's like, other people above me, and I don't think I could live with the thought of helping other people make more money when I should be making it for myself. The lone billionaire sounds good. Get a bunch of investments rolling that just generate cash on their own, while I sit next to my pool and sip cocktails with hot babes. What do you think my prospects are for that here?

[He's not being sexist, just courteous.]

Very well, if it bothers you so much to be addressed according to your status, then..."York" will do just as well.

[There's slight reluctance for him to just call her by her name, but if she really insisted, and it did seem to be the social norm in Omega to address others without their proper titles. He doesn't like it, of course, but there are many things Xiahou Dun doesn't like about Omega and he's just going to have to live with it.]

So you're saying that you can ensure that only my omni-tool can open this door?

[ York really doesn't have any status to speak of, at least as far as she's concerned. And being called "lady" is just too weird. ]

Yeah, and anyone else who lives here, too. Work for you?

I'd say you're gonna have a tough time finding a reputable investment broker in this town. You might have to stick it out at the pizza place a little longer if you're aiming for billionairehood.

I think as long as you're not too picky, you won't be too disappointed.

[ She grins at him, totally shamelessly. ]

[ Arthur's usually got the bonus of a PASIV on hand when he tells this story - that, or it's someone who already suspected the device's existence. He watches York curiously. ]

No. I can fake one well enough to get hired, though.

[ He offers this with a hesitant curl of a smile. ]

I am the sole user of the premise at the moment so just my omni-tool will do for now, but if I do require others to be able to access the apartment would it be possible for me to contact you again?

[she can only nod with a small smile.] I'll be there. Maybe I can even make sure you don't get harassed too much.

[pause, and she quirks a brow.] Not gonna mind if I bring the sword, are you?
